A substantial coronal hole rotated across the face of the sun in footage captured Jan. 30 - Feb. 3, 2017, by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. Coronal holes are areas of open magnetic field from which solar wind particles stream into space. In this wavelength of extreme ultraviolet light, the coronal hole appears as a dark area near the lower center of the sun. Extreme ultraviolet light is typically invisible to our eyes, but is colorized here in bronze.
This same coronal hole was facing Earth about a month ago, seen here in footage captured Jan. 2-5
